Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
